General

Since the beginning of the 1980s, TotalEnergies has been present in the automotive market, working more specifically with the Fuel Tank Systems producers. TotalEnergies is currently one of the High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) leading suppliers in the market, showing its commitment to Tier 1 customers and automobile manufacturers.

TotalEnergies HDPE resins for Fuel Tank Systems are produced by continuous suspension polymerization ("Slurry") using a low pressure catalytic process. This process is particularly adapted for the HDPE that is used for the production of Fuel Tanks and SCR Tanks.

TotalEnergies HDPE grades for Fuel Tank Systems are available with reduced CO2 footprint by mass balance with ISCC Plus certification (bio and bio-circular feedstock).

Plastic Fuel Tanks

Since the 1980s, car manufacturers have been replacing steel fuel tanks by HDPE fuel tanks. HDPE tanks are lighter, not subject to corrosion, low cost, offering a high freedom of design as well as better safety in terms of impact and fire resistance. State-of-the-art multilayer technology allows to pass the most stringent fuel permeation requirements.

Fuel Tank

TotalEnergies Fuel Tank resins MS201B, MS201N, and MS201BN-NA key characteristics are:

  • Excellent ESCR
  • Outstanding resistance to fuel ageing
  • Excellent impact resistance
  • Easy processing
  • High melt strength
  • Suitability for all common barrier systems

Polyethylene for Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Tanks

Since the 2010s, nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from diesel cars have become a concern. Car manufacturers have developed the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) process to convert the NOx contained in the exhaust of diesel cars into water vapour and nitrogen.

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Tanks

A specific Tank is needed to contain the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) also known as AdBlue®. The SCR Tank can be produced by extrusion blow-moulding using Fuel Tank grades or by injection moulding. TotalEnergies has developed a specific grade HDPE MS482 for injection moulding of SCR tanks.

TotalEnergies SCR Tank resins key characteristics are:

  • Excellent ESCR
  • Outstanding resistance to DEF (AdBlue®) ageing
  • Easy processing
  • Good dimensional stability

Polyethylene for Filler Pipes

Filler pipes connect the Fuel Tank with the fuel dispensing system. Generally, the filler pipe is produced by a blow-moulding process using the same resin as the Plastic Fuel Tank.

Filler pipes

Since the 2000's concerns have arisen about electrostatic discharge issues during fill and refill of fuel tanks. TotalEnergies has developed a specific conductive compound allowing to dissipate electrostatic charges built up during fuel tank filling. The conductivity of HDPE ESD201B is obtained by the addition of a specific conductive carbon black.

HDPE ESD201B can be used in mono or multi-layer extrusion and is suitable for the most common barrier treatments.
